Tech Level
.
Summary This topic discusses tech-levels in Aventuria.

Aventurian Tech-Level, globally, is a straight 3 - middle ages. While some technologs maybe higher, the goal and mostly accepted reference is to the middle ages. This does not mean that all states share the same tech level. In general, the Horasian state is a TL 4 society, naturally (in proper Aventuria) without black poweder weapons, but their non-gun-powder equivalents. Thorwal is a straight TL 2 society. Some of the southern islands are TL 0 or TL 1, naturally.

In general, when going to the countryside, the tech level will drop by at least one, though material of the higher TL will still be available. So, when in Thorwal (TL2) going to outskirt settlements, you may be in a TL 1 society with TL 2 weapons, but the infrastructure will in general mostly support TL 1. When going from Kuslik (Horasian, TL4) to some outskirt settlement, you will find a TL 3 society, though people will have TL 4 quipment.

On the other side, given enough time and money, you will even find TL 4 weapons in Festum (Bornland, TL 3) and even TL 4 medical care by someone who did study in Kuslik.

Please note that the Gurps TL related rules, especially regaring starting money and medical abilities, do in fact make the TL differences a lot harder than they were in original TDE. This is considered to be beneficial, as it puts more emphasis on cultural differences.

For characters, please apply the High TL / Low TL Advantage/Disadvantage as appropriate. It is adviced to always assume that the standard TL is 3, as aventurian heroes, mostly, will travel through all of Aventuria.

A alternative view of the advancement of horasians may be, give them the TL3+1 wich refers more spefic on there Firearms out a revolutionary Break in the Fields of weapon technology as well as the ohter scientific achievments wich arent TL4 thinking an working. Especially in the phillosophical field the horasians are still miles away from modern rationalism and scientific theory cause of the bare existence of gods and magic wich making the formulating of natural laws a little... difficult. The basics for an modern Science may exist in Cult of Nandus (the god of free education, phillosophers and inventors) but arent realy popular and the more scholastic approuch of the cult of his mother Hesinde, wich is heavily supported by the Horas, dominating the field.

The Dwarfs are in the field of science as advanced as the Horasians at least as it make senses there aren't even thinking about ships and ohter things not relatet to there way of living. They also may fall back behind the Horasians cause of there extremly conservative culture.

The Thorwales were in this viev then TL 2+1 cause of there extremly good viking technology wich can produce at least medival quality and sophistiation.

The Mittelreich, Bornland, Tulamidesstates, Heptarchies, Maraskan and Alnfa so as its neihgbors stay at TL3. The Tribal Soschieties exept the woodpeople and Utulu are TL1 but mostly able du produce TL2 weapons. Some may live under TL 0.

Gunpowder is possible but can explode any time cause of it pulls the attetion of minor ghots of fire, with the attetion increasing as the ammount of gunpowder increasing. Aventurla, as demonstrated by the pubicm material, does not utilize gunpowwder for weaponry (and has it included mostly for fireworks). There is a significant fraction of the players thinking that this makes no logical sense. The fear that gunpowder may modernize aventuria too much is not logic, given the short timeframe since the invention of modern horasian waepons. In addition, battlefield makes (and their fire related spells) are really good at blowing up powder magazines, which would really delay the widespread adoption. These pleayers replace the horasian spring based replacement weapons with real gunpowder weapons. That does not alter the feel of the game, besides improoving the noise levels, as the replacemenet weapons have been designed to provide a musketeer feeling for playing in the Horas. If anything, it makes the weapons less dangerous, as the "real" damage and range are lower.

This Wiki handles the conversion rules for the The Dark Eye setting.
