Exploring the old home of her grandfather, young Andrea Prestwick encountered the ghost of her great grandmother, Mildred. Mildred had been the WWII era heroine Miss Spangle and died in 1951. What no one knew was that the Speedster of the European Theatre had become the drone of the Nazi Nosferatu Baron von Lich. The Baron, in fact finally killed her when she broke free of his mental domination. She wants revenge and charges Andrea up with her powers by infusing her with her ectoplasm periodically. She gained Miss Spangle's speed and apparetnly via the ectoplasm, the ability to lose her solidity.
Unfortunately, Mildred is a little on the crazy side an a LOT on the nagging perfectionist side. The n name “Spangled” came as a compromise between Ms. Spangle, which Mildred abhorred and Miss Spange II, which Andrea had no intention of ever using. Can Andrea destroy the undead Nazi vampire before life with great granny drives her over the Edge????
That's the story as Andrea knows it. The reality is a bit well, there really aren't a lot of shades of grey in this black and white tale. It's just a lot blacker than she realizes.
A question Andrea could but hasn't asked is, why is great grandma a ghost when she was a vampire's minion and later kill? Shouldn't she be a vampire hereself?
The truth was that Miss Spangler fell in love with the vampire and willingly became his servant, betraying her country and many of her team to grisly deaths. In 1943, under his direction, she accepted the weekly marriage proposal of the team's gadgeteer, Michael Prestwick II to better spy on his activities. This resulted in Michael Prestwick III being born in early 1944. Time passed, the war was won, and Baron von Lich joined that faction of the Reich Intelligence services that aligned themselves with the Soviets.
By 1952 a less innocent Michael Prestwick II, Ph.D. had learned what a monster he had married and laid a trap for her and the Baron. Nerve Gas mixed with Garlic dust and holy water went off when the two met and Mildred died. The Baron was affected and if his dead body could have died it would have. As it was all the nerve gas did was put the vamp into incredible pain. He had to flee and try to find a cure to the relentless agaony. Mildred Prestwick found she could not pass on to the next world and worse was trapped in the basement of her own home.
That might have been it, with one of von Lich's vampiric agents destroying him and taking over his empire in 1955, but the vampire also woldn't pass over. A spirit now himself, he could return to America to get vengeance on Michael Prestwick II and discover his 'love' was still trapped in that very home. The house lay abandoned haunted by two very guilty ghosts. Michael Prestwick III and his two siblings grew up in orphanages and foster homes never to return.
And von Lich planned and learned and once he saw a way he might destroy the vampire who'd usurped his place using the a descendant of Mildred Prestwick. He maneuvered events so that Andrea would be accepted at a college in her ancestral home town. And to arrange matters so the family learned the home of Michael and Mildred was still legally theirs. Some final actions on his part ensured that Andrea would move in and live in the home while she went to college. All that remained was for her to go down to the basement alone sometime and Mildred would do the rest.
Andrea is being groomed to destroy the vampire who destroyed von Lich. Having repeatedly let Mildred infuse her with ectoplasm, Andrea is exceptionally vulnerable to being possessed or even displaced by the ghost of her great grandmother. Once the vampire is dead and Mildred inhabits her descendant's body their real plan will begin!
